Main places in Rome:

Rome Termini: the main railway station. Hundred of lodgings around, but it is reccomend to read the tripadvisor comments prior to perform the reservation.
Rome Tiburtina: the second railway station in the city.
Rome Fiumicino: the main airport of the city, very well linked by train with the city center. Trains departing every 30 minutes to the Rome Termini station, running from 5 am up to 23.30, 11EUR per person.
Rome Ciampino: the town east of Rome, which is hosted the second airport in Rome. Ciampino is very well linked with Rome center by bus (TERRAVISION). The airport has not a train station inside, and to get to the Ciampino airport there is a bus (Cotral), but this way is a little complicated. It is reccomended to get the direct bus TERRAVISION.

Nevertheless the public transportation system in Rome is not exactly the most efficient, most of the main hotspots in Rome are in central Rome and well linked by metro:
Coliseum, Vatican and Saint Peter's Dome, Piazza Spagna, Barberini, Fontana di Trevi, Piramide are some of them.
